Show YALE'S NEW CAPTAIN IS A STAR PLAYER Coy Is First Man to Be Eleeted From New Haven in Twenty-Five Years. i Tribune Special Sporting Service. NEW HAVEN, Dec. o. Edward H. Coy, Yale's new captain, is a Now Havon boy and ho is tho first Nov. Haven boi' to bo elected captain in over twent3'-ono years, tho only other ono having been Walter Camp, who was captain in 1S7S and 1S79. Captain-elect Coy is one of tho most brilliant and sensational players Yale has had in many years. He is 20 years old. tho youngest captain ever chosen: is just 'six fCot tall, and weighs 195 pounds. His magnificent playing won the Princoton gamo last fall, and his brace in the second half .this year won the gamo against tho Tigers. In the Harvard gamo Ooy played well, but had . poor support. Coy is the regtilar fullback, but has played several other positions on tho team. . At Ilotchkiss be was fuUback j and started in that position whou captain cap-tain of tho freshman team hero. The night before tho Yale-Princeton game two years ago seven of the regulars j wore Laid off tho team and Coy wont I up to tackle, playing a groat game. In the Yale-Princton game this faU ho played at end, but shifted himself to fullback botwecu the halvos. i Coy is- active in many other sports besides football. His freshman year ho played on tho basoball team, and when the baseball gamo was over ho trotted over to thn track meet with the Princeton freshmen and won the high jump. In this spring's varsity meet he won tho high jump and the hammer throw, but was ill at the timo of the intercoUegiates. For a while last spring ho playod first base on the baseball nine. Ho was on his freshman fresh-man baskotball team and on the university uni-versity hockey team. When ho gets time ho plays tenuis and at Hotch-kiss Hotch-kiss was school champion. Coy's father v.'as the late Edward Coy. His brother, Sherman Coy. Yale 1901, who played oud on Gordon Brown's famous eleven, and who was manager of the track team in his senior sen-ior year. "Ted" Coy is a member of the glee club and of tho junior prom-'enade prom-'enade committee, I he highest honor of junior year socially.. Most of Coy's irieuds and somo of those who opposed him will bo back next, yoar and the prospects for. the team are very good. Logau, Haines, Kilpatrick. Neadelo and tho two freshmen, Savage and Vaughn, will be candidates for end positions. Henry Hobbs will be back at left tackle. Andrus at loft guard, Gooney, Hyde and Loree will scrap it out for center; Gocbcl will bo at right guard, right tackle will be vacant and Brides will bo missed: Lerritt, of the freshman ; team, will make a quarterback worthy I of succeeding- "Tad" Jone3. Foster Kockwoll and Guv llulchinson; Philbin, Murphy and Daly aro all good halfbacks; half-backs; Coy is a good fuUback. with Field os a substitute. |
