Show TRUST QUESTION UP BEFORE TARIFF PROBERS WASHINGTON, Dec. 5. Referring to over a dozen "trusts," in his .arguments .argu-ments for tariff reduction. Herbert E. Mjles, of Racine, Wis., chairman of the tariff committee of the National Association Asso-ciation of Manufacturers, was the principal prin-cipal witness before the Houso ways and means committee today. He was on tho stand five hours and will again appear next Tuesday. He was severely questioned by Republicans and Democrats Demo-crats alike, and his romarks caused considerable discussion of tho attitude of the political parties in respect to tariff revision. Ho compared the. percentage per-centage of the prices of certain articles, which represented the labor cost', with the percentage of protection afforded those articles by the tariff. Chairman Payne repeatedly told Mr. Miles that the committeo would Iiko to hav a detailed statement of his comparative figures. Ho contended that the oil, steel, brass goods, car builders, locomotive, locomo-tive, farming tools, linseed oil, sugar, tobacco, glucose, chemical, meat, rubber rub-ber goods, leathor and lumbor so-called "trusts" receive protection that is much too great in comparison with tho labor cost on thoir products. |
