Show iS: Sm E08GEHDDG The University of Utah Jazz Ensemble will present a free public concert Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Bountiful Community Church, 100 North 400 East. HENRY Wolking, director of the ensemble, describes the program as a "springtime potpourri of jazz." The 22-piece group will play a variety of works ranging from ragtime to avant-garde compositions. THE PROGRAM will include newly-transcribed works by ragtime composer "Jelly Roll" Morton, such as "King Porter Stomp" and "Chicago Breakdown." The ensemble will present these tunes in their original style and instrumentation. The musicians will also play a new piece by Merrill Clark, "Judy's Song," and a John Coltrane version of "Limehouse Blues." The concert will also feature some standard big band tunes like "Moon River" and "Darn That Dream." THE ENTIRE group will perform some numbers. Other selections will highlight small ensembles and soloists. The jazz ensemble recently won praise at the annual Orange Coast College Jazz Festival in Costa Mesa, Calif. Two of the band's musicians, trombone player Brent Ryder and drummer Mark Lignell, won awards for outstanding performances. Mr. Ryder was also honored for his composition, composi-tion, "Lady." JOHN Price, a judge at the festival and composer for the NBC Orchestra, which appears ap-pears nightly on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show, told the band it was "a real pleasure to have you play for us." Another judge, Leon Breeden, director of the North Texas State University 1:00 Band, said "I'm really impressed; a marvelous performance." per-formance." THE JAZZ ensemble has recorded the material played at the festival for release on a new record album. The U. of U. is one of only 12 major colleges which offer a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz. The Sunday concert is the second in a series of three musical events sponsored by BCC during the "Great 50 Days" celebration between Easter and Pentacost. ON SUNDAY May 23, a choir from Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City will present an evening of Black Gospel Music at BCC. All the concerts are designed to offer music for the entire family. |
