Show LIGHTS ARE TD BE WiEDi FIA! Big Demonstration Will Mark Dedication of the New System. Salt Lake's new street lighting system, sys-tem, the first of its kind in the United States, will be formally dedicated and the electric current turned into the big lights at 0 o'clock next Friday night. Salt Lake's new system, the first district dis-trict of which comprises both bides of Main street from South Temple to Fifth South street, was designated by W. D 'Arcy Ryan, the noted illumination engineer who designed and superintended superin-tended the installation of the woncertul electric lighting system for the Panarna-Pacitic Panarna-Pacitic ex position. Mayor Kerry of Salt Lake will give an address from a large platform constructed con-structed on Main street immediately in front of the Utah Power & Light company's com-pany's retail stores in the Kearns building, and special wiring will be run to this staud and a switch installed, which will be closed by Mayor Ferry promptly at 9 o 'clock Friday night, thpreby illuminating Main street with the new lights. The members of t he board of governors gov-ernors of the Commercial club have interested in-terested themselves in making the event a memorable night in Salt Lake, and yesterday a committee was appointed jointly bv Mavor Ferry and President F. 0. Richmond of the Commercial club to take charge of the arrangements for a gala night down town next Friday night. The committee consists of Lafayette Hanchett, chairman ; Sylvester Q. Can-nou, Can-nou, city engineer; W. T. Edwards, O. J. Salisbury and Edward Rosenbaum. This committee will have entire charge of the celebration and the plans already al-ready outlined call for a vertible carnival car-nival night downtown. Three bands have already been engaged en-gaged to render concerts on Main street prior to the dedication of the new lighting light-ing system. One band will be stationed at South Temple and Main streets, another an-other at Broadway and Main and the third band will be on t he platform in front of the Kearns building. These three bands will begin to plav at 8 o 'clock and con tinue until 8:30. At that time the band at upper Main street and the one at lower Main street will join forces with the band in front of the Utah Power & Light cvompany's office in the Kearns building and under un-der the direction of John Held the three will render several concert selections. selec-tions. Then Mayor Ferry will adress the throng in the streets and at 9 o'clock-will o'clock-will close the switch that turns on the lights in the new lamps. Luminous are lamps will shed soft floods of light from seventy standards. There will bo 210 lamps, each with a capacity of about three-quarter horsepower horse-power and a total of 1 i0 horse-power will be used. There will be fourteen lamps to a block and after midnight four lamps on each block will be kept in service until dawn. The lights will be twenty-nine feet above the sidewalk and will not only illuminate the paths of traffic, out also outline the buildings splendidiv. The cost of the svstem so far is $40,000, $25.."j34.ti9 of which the property owners of Salt Lake will pay as their portion. |
