Show MORRIS IS nEAMED COUNTY CHAIRMAH; Republican State Committee Commit-tee Makes Selection After Considerable Discussion. TO PICK SECRETARY Congressional Committee Makes Preparation for Campaign. Aftpr a conference that lasted all afternoon, aft-ernoon, the members of the county Re-publiran Re-publiran committee and the Republican county candidates yesterday selected Charles M. Morris, secretary of the Republican Re-publican state committee, fls chairman of ihe Salt Lake county Republican committee for the ensuing two years. i u sr.me ways the selection of Mr. Morris for the position came as a surprise. sur-prise. For some time past he had been mentioned as a likely candidate for the post, but his selection was opposed by .State; Chairman Glen Miller on the ground that it. would cripple the state organization at a time when it should be most effective. The names of ,T. E. Darmer, O. W. Carlson, R. B. Porter and Charles M. Morris were presented to the committee as the candidates for the chairmanship, and but little time was lost in selecting Mr. Morris. The trouble arose when t he selection was announced to Chairman Chair-man Miller. Mr. Morris declared that he would not accept the post unless it was agreeable, to Mr. Miller, and Mr. Miller struggled valiantlv to have the committeemen and candidates make another an-other selection. But he was out-talked and reluctantly consented to the arrangement. ar-rangement. Appointment Deferred. Mr. -Morris s successor as secretary of the state committee has not been announced. Chairman Miller declined to comment, on the subject last night further Than to suggest that the selection selec-tion might be deferred for some time, j t is possible 'that Gilbert Williams, who has been acting in the capacity of assistant secretary, will assume the duties of secretary until a permanent secretary is selected. A resolution was adopted at the meeting meet-ing giving Mr. Morris full authority to select and appoint the secretary of the Republican county committee. Mr. Morris Mor-ris said last night that he had given the matter no thought as yet, as his selection selec-tion as county chairman came unexpectedly unex-pectedly and without solicitation. A committee was appointed by the county committee to arrange for permanent per-manent campaign headquarters for the county organization in the downtown district. An effort will be made to find quarters for the Republican county coun-ty organization some place on Main street. The Republican Second district congressional con-gressional committee also met yesterday afternoon, perfected its organ i7ation .?nd outlined plans for the campaign in the four counties included in the district. dis-trict. I. E. Willey of Salt Lake was elected chairman and K. K. Steffenscn of Salt Lake was chosen as secretarv. Charles R. Mabey of Bountiful. Republican Repub-lican nominee for congress from the Second district, attended the meeting and gave a short talk. Another meeting meet-ing of the committee will be held here October 7.
