Candy-making contestants defied stormy weather to produce 17 batches of prize winning divinity during Southern Utah Stae College Vocational Day activities held here recently. As part of traditional home economics and family life competition, 196 students from 11 Utah schools visited SUSC to compete in divinity making, original toy construction, con-struction, and to attend several home making demonstrations. Students from Delta High School won sweepstakes ribbons in both areas of competition according to Ada Carpenter, Chairperson of the SUSC Department of Family Life. Debbie McArthur and Wendy Hathaway received weepstakes honors for their perfect batch of divinity while their schoolmates Shellie Morris and Kris Anderson walked away with sweepstakes honors for their handmade doll house and furniture. "We were very pleased to host the home economics part of Vocational Day activities," Mrs. Carpenter said. She said that another 5H5 students were on campus to compete in business contests and nearly 300 students stationed at the SUSC Valley Farm competing com-peting in agricultural contests. "Entries in family life and home economics showt'd more originality and creative ability than ever before and we are pleased that each year more young men enter our contests," Mrs. Carpenter said. "Each year a recipe is sent to school prior to Vocational Day so that students have a chance to perfect their cooking techniques. This year's recipe was a tough one, even for good weather, so we're quite delighted with the results. "The entries in the original toy contest included everything from the sweepstakes doll house to nuts and bolts. These 'made' toys were the creations of some very talented students," she said. During the day several mini demonstrations were held including Brazilian Embroidery with Norma E. Lunt, a representative of Cor Imports; a Weaving Demonstration by Carmen Jones, SUSC Weaving Instructor; In-structor; and demonstrations demon-strations on Huggables or stuffed toys, Levi Patchwork, Pat-chwork, Make It Yourself Projects, and Pita Bread by SUSC students Jean Ferguson, Charlinda Munford, Cherilyn Calder, and Carol Fife.
