Challis said he feels his background in educational and civic service qualify him for duties of the office. Library Director at SUSC since 1959, his affiliation with libraries began in 1952 as librarian of Bountiful High School. He also held a position on the library staff at the University of Utah his alma mater, from 1956 to 1959. His position as College Historian began in 1961 and continues to the present time. Active in historical societies, he has been President of the Iron County Chapter of the Utah Historical Society, as well as secretary and program chairman. Challis has held positions of responsibility with several library associations, including the Utah Library Association and the American Library Association. Challis's civic responsibility include in-clude his position as Chariman of the Red Cross Blood Drive in Iron County, 1961-65, Cedar City Bicentennial Celebration Chairman in 1976, and Chairman of Cedr City's 125th and 126th birthday anniversaries, 1976-77. Challis has been a life-long active member of the LDS Church and woker with the boy scoutrs. He was scoutmaster with Troop 347 of the 7th Ward for 11 years. In 1976, he received a Scouter's Key Award for his years of service and completion of leadership programs. "If elected to the position of state representative," Challis said, "I hope to work toward development of water, recreation, and roads in Kane and Iron Counties. In addition, I will work to preserve historic sites and materials." Challis and his wife Ruth have five children and have lived in Cedar City for 19 years. A. TOM CHALLIS A. Tom Challis, director and historian of the Southern Utah State College Library, announced Tuesday his intention to run for the office of state representative on the Democratic ticket in District 74, Iron and Kane Counties. Challis said his decision was due partly to the urging of many citizens who suggested that he file for the office of state representative. "I did not openly seek this candidacy can-didacy but I am committed to learning lear-ning about the issues concerning this office and will conscientiously serve ' my constituency if elected," he stated.
