Show Political races shape up as deadline Hears y Races for various political offices on the state and county level were beginning to shape up late Tuesday afternoon with filing being recorded for all but one of the positions. The Republicans have been the most active and the Iron County Two Year Commission post has drawn the widest interest. It appears that only on the Republican side of the ledger will there be a need for a Primary Election and that could be eliminated through the County Mass Meeting depending on the amount of support that each of the candidates can garner for their candidacy. No candidates Only the office of Iron County Attorney At-torney was without a candidate late Tuesday night but deadline for filing was scheduled to remain open through Tuesday evening and it was anticipated that candidates would be announced for the position. Hans Chamberlain, who has served as Iron County Attorney since August 1970, announced Tuesday that he would not seek re-election. However, there were indications that other attorneys in the area were interested and it was anticipated that candidates would be announced Wednesday before the filing deadline. Chamberlain was appointed County Attorney upon the resignation of Robert L. Gardner and was then elected for two consecutive four year terms. Following is a rundown of the offices of-fices which are up for election in November and the candidates who have filed to fill those offices through Tuesday evening: State Representative for Iron and Kane Counties: Garth Jones, Republican, the incumbent who will be challenged by Tom Challis on the Democratic ticket. Four Year County Commissioner: Grant Seaman, a republican, and Ross Hilton a Democratic. Seaman has completed a two year term on the commission and is seeking a four-year four-year term this outing. Most Interest here Two Year County Commission: Dee Cowan and Robert Price, both Repblicans; Dr. Ned 0. Gregerson, Democratic and Rodney Brady, Independent. In-dependent. Iron County Sheriff: Ira Schopp- mann, and Dan Harris, both Republicans and Harold Bradley, Democrat. Schoppmann is the incumbent. in-cumbent. County Assessor: H. Dee White and Steve Grimshaw, both Republicans with White the incumbent. Incumbents LaMar Jensen, Treasurer; Joan Wasden, Recorder, both Republicans they are the only ones who has filed through Tuesday night. The Commission recently decided to divide the office of Clerk -Auditor, a position that has been held for several years by Clari Hulet, Republican. With the split Hulet had filed for the Clerk position and another Republican Dennis Lowder has filed for auditor. In a non-partisan race two candidates can-didates have filed for Justice of the Peace for Cedar City - Richard Payton and Margaret Miller. However, a recent ruling by the Attorney At-torney General questions whether either of the candidates can serve since they live in an incorporated area that is served by a City or Precinct Court. In another non-partisan balloting Mrs. Gwen Clark has filed to seek reelection re-election to the Iron County School Board for a four year term for School Precinct No. 4. |
