Show Composerto be honored in Parowan Aug. 5 PAROWAN - Oliejer Messiaen, foremost among living European composers, visited Soutehrn Utah in 1973. He was so moved by the brilliant colors of the canyons, the bizarre rock formations and the sound and sight of native birds, that he wrote a grand symphonic sym-phonic work entitled "Des Canyons Aux Etoiles" (From the canyuons to the stars"). After returning from his visit to Utah he said: "This is the most mystical part of America.... Cedar Breaks is one of the wonders of Utah.. ..a vast amphitheatre - sliding down towards a deep abyss of which the orange, yellow, brown and red rocks stand up like walls, columns, towers, turrets and dungeons. The Aspens, the first trace of snow, the wind which blows violently, add even more to the majesty of the site. All these features inspired in me a feeling of awe." A splendid red mountain with red cliffs near Parowan, will be named in honor of Olivier Messiaen. A celebration of his music and of the beauty of southern Utah will take place in Parowan on August 5. |
