The three night Telethon will conclude this evening, Thursday, with calls being made between 6 and 10 p.m. Cedar Action Group appearatCity Council "You can't stop us now," declared Jack Carter, local businessman and president of the Cedar Action Group, as he reported to the Cedar City Council on the progress of Highland Park home relocation. So far into the fund-raising end of the project, Carter said, "results have been heart-thrilling.'; He emphasized that this week's telethon is not the end, but just the beginning of the CAG's efforts. Carter also said he hopes the investment in-vestment effort will "mushroom outside the city." Also reporting to the council on relocation efforts was Charles Blackburn, Black-burn, president of the Cedar Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints. The LDS Church, the council noted, is an integral force behind the volunteer effort to move families from the distressed area. Need to help "We have discovered not only a need to be helped," Blackburn said, "but a need to help. That's our motive-tq build unity." Blackburn also said he believes that "those who give receive blessings as much as those who receive." The quorums and the wards of the entire Cedar Region of the Church may eventually get involved in the project, he said. Presently the 21 homes in the most immediate danger have been assigned to wards who will be responsible for the relocation ef fort. In some cases two wards will be responsible fo the family, depending on the resources of the ward, and in other cases a branch of the SUSC Stake will also be involved. "We want to involve the whole community, Blackburn, a local construction executive, said. "Each family will be assigned to a bishop during the move. This will form the nucleus of help and so each ward has a family to be involved with." Three ready Blackburn noted that the foundation was complete in Gary Jensen's new lot and two more homes may be ready when the first home is to be moved. He also said movers have been contacted to see if they would consider con-sider locating a supervisor and equipment locally, letting all other labor be provided locally in order to get a lower price. "They are considering con-sidering our offer," he said. Blackburn said no monies will be forced on those who don't want financial aid. He also said non-LDS home-owners are asked to participate, par-ticipate, but will not be forced in any way. "The whole idea is to receive blessings as a community, "Blackburn "Black-burn said. "Let's build on bricks instead of throwing them. If we get the spirit of this thing, Cedar City w ill continue to be a beautiful place to live." |
