Show Chamber offers avenue of community service "A slide presentation is being prepared which will aid those who contact the travelling public on how to answer the most often asked questions," he explained. "We also have our employee of the month program to honor such employees." Carter said he hopes to expand the work of the Industrial In-dustrial Development Committee in the near future. (In the next few weeks, the RECORD will feature the work of the chamber and their major committees.) The Chamber of Commerce Com-merce has proved to be a "perfect means to get things done," Cedar Chamber President Jack Carter stated in an interview this week. Carter emphasized the chamber is open for membership from individual citizens, not just businesses, as many think. "Any member of the community can be a member of the chamber," Carter explained. "Each individual of the community is important to the chamber available. It is a perfect vehicle the community can work through to better the the community." Carter said the chamber is an arm of the community and belongs to the community. com-munity. "As I have been attending state chamber of commerce meetings, I find we have one of the finest chambers for a community our size in the state." Who Would? Often the work of the chamber is a case of "if we didn't do it, who would?" Carter stated. As an example he said the chamber handles 10,000 walkd-in inquires in their building on North Main, and over 10,000 written inquires for information. "I certainly don't know who else would do it," Carter said. "It is a must for a community our size. I don't know how we could function without it." When becoming members of the chamber and when sending in their dues, people really ought to look into the work the chamber is doing, he added. Carter said the local chapter of the group is especially proud of their new building next to the city park. One of his concerns, he noted, was paying off the indebtedness incurred in construction the tourist center. About $10,000 is left to pay off. Markt plaques One way the chamber hopes to pay off the debt, he said, is through activities of the Special Events and Attractions Committee. That group, headed by Leslie Childs and Lou Cardon, is presently planning to market commemorative com-memorative plaques which use spikes taken from the spur at the old Union Pacific Depot near the chamber building. "We can sell a ton to tourists, and to local community members who are interested in a bit of memorabilia too," he said. Plans are also in the mill to sell gold-plated spikes to businesses in the area who would like to contribute to the cause, he said. Other committees that are showing a "lot of committment," com-mittment," Carter said, are the Tourist and Accomodations Ac-comodations Committee, the College and Governement Affairs Committee, the Industrial Development Committee and the Membership Mem-bership Committee. Carter also said he is particularly proud of the Prospectors, the welcoming arm of the Chamber. Educate employees The Tourist and Accomodations Ac-comodations Committee is in the process of education people who work with the traveling public, motels and restaurants, Carter said, letting the employees know of the important parts of Cedar City and things tourists can do in the area. , |
