Show Dixie Rebels Emerge Victorious In St. George Invitational Tournament Dixie Junior College won its own basketball tournament at St. George Fnuy night when it defeated de-feated Mesa College of Grand Junction, Colo.. 85-77. The Rebels Re-bels came up with three upset victories In the second annual event to win top honors. They defeated Casper, Wyo., In the opening round, trimmed Eastern East-ern Arizona oi Thatcher, In the semi-finals before meeting Mesa for the championship. The College of Southern Utah Thunderbirds did not fare so well. Coach Boyd Adams' crew wound up In seventh place In the eight team event losing the first two rounds of play, then defeat-ing defeat-ing Chaffey of Ontario, Calif, in the final night of action. Mesa automatically finished in second place. Eastern Arizona won third place In the Junior college col-lege classic with a 94-93 win ovei Snow College, and Casper, Wyo took fourth by beating Ricks Col lege 92 to 61. In the opening round the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona do minated the rebounding to force the CSU Thunderbirds to the con Rotation round of the tourna ment with a 79 to 66 white-wash . victory. Hayward Sharp led th scoring for Arizona with 16 but ii was little Joe Acker at 5 feet i inches who served as the play' maker. Keliey Romney came ofl the bench to hit 12 when Sharp got into trouble with fouls. For the CSU T-Birds Marlar Roper lei the scoring with If followed by Ray Greenberg witri 15. Meeting Casper, Wyo. in th second round of play the Thunderbirds Thun-derbirds tried against the Wyoming Wyo-ming crew what Dixie had don the previous night a full court press and It backfired. Both teams are nicknamed Thunderbirds Thunder-birds and the Wyoming T-Birds walked off with a 80 to 60 win. The victory for Casper put them in the consolation finals which they won. The CSU crew, trailing the Wyoming Wy-oming team tried a full court press that backfired, giving them an opportunity to increase their margin and move out for the victory. It was also a case of speed as the T-Birrls of Wyoming outhustled the T-Birds of Cedar City to take an early lead that they maintained throughout the gam'''. Leading the way was Ed Camclton, who hit for 27 points. He was backed up by Sam Williams Wil-liams with 11. LaMar rush was high for CSU with II. although he !eft the game on fouls early in the second half. In the final round of play the T-Blrds came up with a 66 to 53 win over Chaffey College. Both clubs used their reserves extensively exten-sively with nearly all members of both squads getting into the scoring scor-ing column. It was the fourth game in as many nights for both clubs. Chaffey took an early lead in the game and left the floor at intermission in-termission with a 34 to 27 advantage. ad-vantage. Mesa's Harry GiUmore was chosen cho-sen outstanding player of the event by a committee composed of coaches, referees and members at large.
