Sen. Bennett said, 'That totals out to 45 persons running the War on Poverty receiving at total of $974,595." The Utahn declared "I think it is ironical that 'poverty headquarters' head-quarters' plans to start its War on Poverty with a total staff of 1,050 and with salaries such as those listed. So far it appears to be nothing more than a mass employment program giving out-of-work Democratic politicians ! jobs." I Sen. Bennett said that the "War on Poverty" was set up to help the poor but the "Johnson Administration's first battle against poverty will be within the Washington bureaucracy." "I propose to Join with Senators Sena-tors from both parties to place curbs on salaries received by officials of-ficials of the so-called poverty program," he declared. |
