Show Rams Make Good Showing at State Tournament; Benson on Honor Team Although the Parowan High school basketball team only won one game while dropping two in last week's State Class B basketball bas-ketball tournament, the boys did a very commendable job at the meet, and gave a very good account ac-count of themselves. After losing the opening game to the strong Leni Pioneers, a team which finished in fourth place in the meet, Coach Twist Jones' Rams went out the next night and trimmed Springville, Coach Alma Garrett's first place team in the Nebo division, and sent it out of the tournament by a 54 to 44 score. Then on Friday night the Rams played the strong Cyprus Pirates right down to the final minutes of the game. At this point the loss of John Benson on personal fouls took the punch from the local lo-cal squad and it went down to a 51 to 46 defeat. The Cyprus team went on the next night to win the consolation championship and fifth place in the meet. The Rams led during the early periods of all three games played in the big B Y U fieldhouse. They led Lehi almost to the halfway mark before dropping back when the players became tired. In the game with Springville, they had a hard time to get started and were behind during the first period per-iod 9 to 7, but took a 21 to 18 lead by half-time. The Rams stretched this lead to 35 to 28 in the third quarter and went on ' to win by a 10-polnt margin. j The Parowan team led Cyprus Cy-prus 14 to 9 at the end of the initial quarter m Friday, but the Pirates came up to tie the Rams at 23-all at half time. The score was still tied at 38 all at the third quarter rest. Benson, one of the best men ever to play basketball for the Parowan high school won a position as guard on the Allstate All-state teams picked by both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News and Telegram, and was rated by many as the outstanding outstand-ing player in the tournament. John received this honor in spite of the fact that ne played on a team that left the meet on the third day, a feat which has been achieved by very few players in state tournament history. He was among the leading scorers of the tourney as well as doing his other duties in a very fine manner. He averaged 18.3 points per game in 10 league contests and scored 51 points in the Region playoffs that put the Parowan team in the state tournament. tour-nament.
