Show Defendant Found Guilty 01 Lesser Charge A jury, after deliberating from 3:30 to 10:10 p. m. yesterday, returned re-turned a verdict of involuntary-manslaughter involuntary-manslaughter and recommended leniency, in the trial of Robert Munford, 72, former Cedar City resident. Mr. Munford was charged with voluntary manslaughter as the result of the death of Rial Black, 54, Hurricane, following a quarrel quar-rel between the two men in which it was alleged that Munford Mun-ford had struck Black over the head with a pitchfork, a blow jthat allegedly caused his death the following day. The defendant will appear before be-fore Judge Will L. Hoyt Friday 'morning to receive sentence on 1 the charge. The jury selected to hear the lease was composed of Alma 'Knight, Milo Corry, Ralph Perkins, Per-kins, Lester S. Heyborne and Lawrence Bess, Cedar City; Joseph Jo-seph E. Lister, Paragonah, and 1 Ivan Dalley, Summit. Witnesses called by the prosecution pro-secution during the trial included includ-ed James B. Sherratt, on whose farm the incident toop place; Dr. ; Clark Mclntyre, Hurricane; Dr. R. ;G. Williams, Cedar City; Mrs. Kathleen Black, widow of Rial Black; Arthur Nelson, Iron County Coun-ty sheriff, and Arcn Benson, dep-J dep-J uty sheriff. j The case was prosecuted by Patrick Fenton, district attorney, and Durham Morris, county attorney. at-torney. Counsel for the defense was LeRoy H. Cox and David Anderson, St. George. Mr. Munford and Mr. Black were threshing grain on the Sherratt Sher-ratt farm when the quarrel oc-'curred, oc-'curred, and the blow was alleged Istrcuk. Mr. Black died the following fol-lowing day, apparently from injuries in-juries caused by the blow. Lloyd Carter, who was arrested in Cedar City recently for passing pass-ing fraudulent checks, was found guilty in the district cmrt term held in Parowan early this week, and was sentenced to imprison' ment in the state penitentiary. His sentence was to serve not less than one year or more than 10 years In the state penitentiary. |
