Show City Council Gives Ball Park Bridge the Go-ahead Construction of a bridge over Coal Creek leading to the city recreation park east of town was assured Thursday night when representative of the Cedar City Lions club and Cedar City Softball Soft-ball association met with the city council to request that action be taken on the matter. Heavy use of the park has resulted re-sulted in the old bridge approaching ap-proaching the park to became entirely inadequate and unsafe, and plans have been under way for some time to build a new steel and concrete bridge. Steel from an abandoned bridge in Washington county was purchased pur-chased last year and moved to the site of the proposed new bridge, but no definite action was taken to complete the structure, struc-ture, city officials maintaining that funds for this purpose were not available. A total of $3,000 was budgeted budget-ed for construction of the bridge during 1953, but when plans were completed for the structure it became apparent, according to City Manager Thomas Thorsen, that $3,000 would nt be sufficient, suffi-cient, and therefore construction was not started. At the meeting Thursday, after the representatives had discussed the matter with the council, emphasizing em-phasizing the urgent need for a new bridge, a motion was passed that "one member of the City Council be appointed to work with the city manager toward to-ward construction of passenger car bridge leading to the Park". Councilman Frank Milne was named by Mayor L. V. Broadbent to assume the responsibility for the completion of the project. Since that time, City Manager Thorsen has stated that plans for the bridge, large enough to handle heavy truck traffic, had been prepared by City Engineer Lloyd Grames, and that construction con-struction would go ahead on the bridge immediately. Although the motion called only for a passenger pas-senger car bridge, Mr. Thorsen stated that the city would undoubtedly un-doubtedly proceed with the construction con-struction of a heavier bridge. He also states that unless weather conditions or high water run-off interfered too severely the brdige should be ready for use by June |
