Show US Merchant Marine Announces Competitive Exams WASHINGTON, -Annual competitive com-petitive examinations for the U. S. Merchant Marine Acadamy at Klnggs Point, N. Y., will be held in five Utah cities on April 11, Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R.Utah) said Thursday. Exam centers include Salt Lake City, Ogden, Logan, Provo and Cedar City civil services offices. The academy trains young men for careers in the merchant marine mar-ine and the naval reserve, Sen. Bennett said, and offers benefits bene-fits similar to those provided at West Point, Annapolis and the Air Force Academy. Basic requirements Include graduation from high school in June, 1955, or earlier, plus sound physical condition. Age requirements require-ments are between 16V4 and 21. Successful candidates will enter the Academy In August. Midshipmen are given a four-year four-year education at the end of which they receive a BS degree, a commission as an ensign in the U. S. naval reserve and a license as either a deck or engineering en-gineering officer in the merchant mer-chant marine at a starting pay of about $500 a month. Sen. Bennett Ben-nett said. Utah has graduated 32 midshipmen mid-shipmen from the academy. One is now enrolled there. |
