Show Board of Commissioners oi Iron County Study Civic Improvements The Board of Iron County Commissioners Com-missioners in regular meeting last week heard a plea from representatives rep-resentatives of Cedar City for assistance as-sistance in building a bridge on 200 North street in the city over Coal creek and leading to the city recreation park on the east side of town. Cedar representatives representa-tives meeting with the commissioners commis-sioners were Mayor L. V. Broad -bent, city councilmen Frank Milne, Marion Grames and Wil-lard Wil-lard Lunt and City Manager Thomas Thorsen. The group ! pointed out that the bridge is needed to safely handle the heavy hea-vy traffic to the recreation area, and estimated that cost would be approximately $12,000. The same group asked the county commissioners to consider consid-er fixing the county tax levies to provide for spending a sum within the boundaries of Cedar City each year equal to the money mon-ey collected through taxes on property within the corporate limits li-mits of the city. The commissioners took both requests under advisement and will study them carefully before final action is taken on either. As an added fire protection for county property the commissioners commission-ers approved the installation of a two-way radio system in the chief deputy sheriff's car and in one of the Cedar City fire trucks in which the county has an interest. inter-est. Such equipment will be considered con-sidered as Civil Defense equipment equip-ment and the State Civil Defense De-fense agency will meet half of the cost of installation. The es timated cost has been set at $000. The county's share will be paid from the miscellaneous appropriation appropri-ation of the general fund. Richard S. Greenland, local supervisor of the Bureau of Land Management, met with the commission com-mission and requested that the county install a cattle guard on the Parowan "Y" road about one mile from the Intersection with the Cedar-Lund highway. The county road supervisor was instructed in-structed to Install the cattle guard as soon as possible. A plan of cooperation between the county and the Bureau of Land Management on the control of noxious weeds in the county, particularly halogeton, was formulated. form-ulated. The matter of joining with other counties in southwestern Utah in financing a cloud seeding seed-ing program as a means of increasing in-creasing precipitation in the area was again considered. The County Clerk was Instructed to secure a report of a hearing recently re-cently held in Washington, D. C. on a bill which proposes federal participation in such a project. No decision will be reached until un-til after this report is received. The Clerk was also instructed to seek suggestions from representative repre-sentative citizens of the county for a name for the rest home for the aged which is being construe-ed construe-ed in Parowan. A name with historical or geographical significance signi-ficance and not branding the home as a charitable institution is being sought by the commissioners. commis-sioners. The commissioners refused to grant John A. Condie a license for the operation of a wrecking yard south of Cedar until such time as he complies with an agreement he had previously made with the commissioners to construct a tight fence along the front of the property that will hide the wrecking yard. Action was taken at the meet-I meet-I ing to Increase the salaries of a number of appointive officers. An increase in the monthly salary of Jack Worthen, janitor and jailer at the city and county building was made boosting the county portion of the salary from $115.00 to $125.00 a month to conform with his pay from Cedar City. Other increases made included a boost of $200 a year, from $1800 to $2000 for the county recorder's deputy, and an Increase of $120 a year, from $2000 to $2120 for the county clerk's deputy. Similar increases in-creases were made in the salaries sala-ries of other full time deputies who do stenographic work for the county. The County Attorney was instructed in-structed to study the matter of preparing an ordinance to control con-trol the type of structures and businesses that may be permitted permit-ted near the public highways of the county. An appropriation of $-1100 was made to the Cedar City airport from the ' county airport fund, and the clerk was instructed to remit this amount to Cedar City. IThe balance of $775.00 remaining 'in the fund was appropriated to Parowan City for use on the airport there, but the fund must be withheld until satisfactory arrangements ar-rangements for cooperation between be-tween the city and county have been completed. Commissioner Douglas Clark I was authorized to confer with Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hey wood to see if satisfactory arrangements can be made with them in con-troling con-troling floods of the Kanarra creek which passes over their property. The county road supervisor was ' instructed to post signs on the Midvalley road that will control traffic in areas where families reside and children frequently pass over the road. High speed travel on the road has been hazardous haz-ardous to residents of the area. |
