Show Troop Scribe Tells Adventures j Of Cedar Scouts at National Jamboree Berrctt Baldwin, scribe for the Cedar City Boy Scout group presently pres-ently attending the National Jamboiee at Irvine Ranch, Calif., has sent a record of the group's activities since it left Cedar City to the Iron County Record for publication. Ray Knell, troop leader Is attending at-tending the Jamboree with the 35 boys, 22 from Cedar City, one from Kanab, one from Fredonia, Ariz., and 11 from Aurora, Utah. Mr. Knell forwarded the Information Infor-mation for publication. Following Follow-ing arc the minutes of the group's activities since it left Cedar City. The group plans to return to Cedar City on the evening eve-ning of July 24. "Our trip started in Provo where we boarded the buses after af-ter saying farewell to our parents par-ents and friends who were there to see us off. From Provo we traveled to Wendover, where we were held up for over two hours waiting for buses that had broken brok-en down. We traveled all night and arrived in Reno, Nev. early Sunday morning, July 12. On the outskirts of Reno we were met by a police escort that took us directly to the Reno park where we rested and were guests of the Reno Melchezidek Priesthood quorum for breakfast and Sunday Sun-day School. We left Reno and traveled on over the Donner Pass taking out time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. "That night we were guests of Travis Air Force Base for a very delicious supper after which we continued on to San Francisco. Francis-co. Here again we were met by a police escort and taken to the fielle Vue hotel in the heart of the city. On the morning of July 13 we were escorted to Treasure Island where a tour of the naval base was enjoyed and we were guests of the Navy for lunch. That afternoon was spent touring San Francisco and we ended up in the evening with a trip to different dif-ferent points of Interest. "The morning of July 14 we left San Francisco and rode all day to los Angeles where we found an elaborate banquet awaiting us in the dining room of the Hotel Alexandria. From the hotel in Los Angeles the buses bus-es went directly to the Jamboree site near Santa Ana where all of our equipment was awaiting us and the rest of the afternon was spent making camp. "The evening of July 15 was spent at the Long Beach Pike enjoying en-joying the amusement rides. "On the lGth the boys left camp and toured San Diego where as guests of the Navy, we had lunch, toured the harbor on LCU (landing craft utility) boats and had supper in the navy halls, coming back to camp to spend the night. "The next morning the Jamboree Jam-boree officially opened at 9 a. m. At this time an aerial bomb went off and flags were raised on the poles at the same Instant all over the camp site.This ceremony cere-mony is repeated every morning. That night the opening program was held at the arena, a big natural amphitheatre holding 50 thousand scouts and thousands of visitors. This program was opened by the American flag going go-ing up on the middle flag pole and each of the state flags going upon either side of the stars and stripes. This program showed the building of our nation by different participating groups. "Saturday, July 18 it was our turn to go to the beach to swim. Each section has a turn at the beach every other day. "Sunday, July 19 all Mormon scouts at the Jamboree met on a i hillside for inspiring church services. ser-vices. Important speakers were Vice President Richard Nixon of the United States, Joseph Wirth-lin, Wirth-lin, piesiding bishop of the L D S church, and Elbert R. Curtis, general superintendent of the Y M M I A conducted the service. ser-vice. In the evening the big event was the religious convocation. At this meeting Vice President Nix- nn cn iWi in tha hnva alone with leaders and representatives from four rr.ajoi churches at the Jamboree, Jam-boree, among them the Mormons. The highlight of the evening came when each boy stood and lighted a candle and repeated the scout oath. I wish that everyone every-one could have seen the beauti-'ful beauti-'ful sifeht of that hillside lit up J with thousands of candles. It was an unforgettable sight and will live long in the memory of all who attended the Jamboree." Young Baldwin ended his notes with this "These are but the highlights of our trip and there is still more to come." |
