Show i Low-fat breakfast suggested Breakfast on the run may be more expensive than you think A large gourmet muffin from your favorite bakery is often 300 calories, with 50 percent of those calories coming from fat A fresh bagel spread with two ounces of cream cheese is about the same. Alternative, low-fat breakfast ideas are part of the updated and improved Slim for Life program. This successful course, sponsored by the American Heart Association, Utah Affiliate, begins the week of i June 3 at 30 locations across the Wasatch Front. 4 'Breakfast in the '90s has to be i fast," says Susan Ward, Heart Association Nutrition Director. "Even with this stipulation, delicious choices are available with less than 30 percent of the calories from fat." To test your healthy sounding apple-cranberry nut muffin, cut it in half and press the cut side to a brown paper bag. Grease spots will appear if it is a high fat muffin. "Breakfast sandwiches sold by fast food outlets on a biscuit or a croissant are, amazingly, over 60 percent of the calories from fat!" cautions Ward. "Hot cakes with butter and syrup are a much better choice at only 20 percent fat ' "Consider preparing a batch of : homemade muffins on the week end," continues the dietitian. "They can be frozen, and on a busy morning popped into the microwave for a few minutes." She suggests using only one egg yolk and the rest whites only. Decrease oil to only two or three tablespoons per recipe and add a tablespoon of fruit juice for every tablespoon of oil you omitted. Use non-fat milk rather than whole milk. No difference differ-ence in taste will be noticeable. "Microwavable hot cereals are a fast breakfast," notes Ward. "Instead of butter, add fruit for flavor, like raisins, dried apricots, fresh bananas, strawberries, or peaches." If you use non-fat milk with your cereal, the percentage of calories from fat is only 11 percent "Look for cold cereals that pro-I pro-I vide at least two grams of fiber per serving," Ward stresses, "and try them occasionally with plain, low fat yogurt instead of milk. A bagel with a thin coal of light cream cheese or Neufchatel cheese is only 200 calories and 20 percent fat A toasted English muffin with one tablespoon of peanut butter comes in under 30 percent of the calories from fat "Both are even easy to eat in the car!" the dietitian laughs. A diet that tastes great, and is healthful and convenient for you and your family is the basis of the Slim for Life program which has helped thousands to lose weight Additional short term and long term behavior changes which support weight loss will be accomplished during the course.
