Show Fake fats available; Products made with fake fats, such as frozen desserts made with the egg white and milk-based product pro-duct Simplesse, are becoming increasingly in-creasingly available. Such products offer the creamy flavor of fat without the calories, making them a tempting choice for many consumers who are tired of feeling guilty about eating high-fat foods. Fake fats are not perfect, however, according to Georgia Lauritzen, Utah State University Extension nutrition specialist. Unfortunately, many of the frozen desserts made with fake fats cost three to four times as much per serving as more traditional low-fat choices, such as ice milk and low-: fat frozen yogurt. For example, Lauritzen said, a; one-half cup serving of a strawberry dessert made with Simplesse has 111 calories and costs 50 cents. The same size serving of fruit-flavored low-fat frozen yogurt has 1 00 calories and costs just 16 cents. Ice milk has even fewer calories per serving and costs less than frozen yogurt. Lauritzen also noted that products pro-ducts made with Simplesse can cause a reaction in people allergic to eggs or cow' s milk. Paying attention to the amount of fat you eat is important, but look at fat in relation to your total caloric intake and your food budget, she. said. |
