Show 'Adopt-a-Competitor' program started The 62 competitors in the Gina Bachauer International In-ternational Piano Competition have received an early welcome to Utah through the efforts of elementary and junior high school students across the state. At the same time, Utah school children are receiving an education in foreign culture, food traditions and people through the Bachauer "Adopt-a-Competitor" program. .The "Adopt-a-Competitor" program, sponsored spon-sored by the Bachauer Foundation, began this year. School classes across the state have been provided with pictures, biographical information, informa-tion, and personal information about the individual in-dividual Bachauer competitors. School teachers then had the opportunity to have their students adopt a competitor by writing letters to the competitors, studying the competitor's culture including food, music and politics, etc... The students involved in the program receive free tickets to the preliminary round of the competition com-petition to hear their competitor play. A special resource class, under the direction of Vicky Gerloch, has adopted Chinese competitor, com-petitor, Tian Jiang. This class has prepared and eaten Chinese food, used chopsticks, studied Chinese culture and music, and has practiced writing in Chinese. Teacher of the Year at Bountiful Elementary, Mickey Murphy, has led her class in adopting Andrei Kasparov, a Russian competitor. The elementary school class has sent Mr. Kasparov maps of Utah and a picture of the class holding his photograph. A compilation of letters exchanged between competitors and Utah students will be on display during the Bachauer competition in the Symphony Sym-phony Hall lobby. The Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, Com-petition, a triennial event, will take place from June 18-29 in Symphony Hall.
