Show Lasf weec's column not completely reod by angry callers Cyclops i By BRYAN GRAY refuted that either. Last week's column pointed out the need for a two-party system. The angry callers apparently didn't Last week's column contained a jab at Republicans. The angry callers didn't read that either. So for those readers asking the newspaper to made a retraction, I have a simple response: There's nothing to retract. If this column made some people uncomfortable, then it filled its purpose and hopefully will spur cooler heads in the Democratic Party to begin organizing. And if they did, they just might win. The one-party control in southern Davis County has created an interesting situation for Republicans, too. Since the Republican nomination seems tantamount tan-tamount to election, the GOP is seeing see-ing a crunch of candidates, many of whom are only nominal Republicans at best. Davis County has Democrats running as Republicans.. .And this summer a Republican candidate for sheriff was even nominatedendorsed by the rival Independent Party. . The Republican Party hasn't said a peep about this confusion. The party is apparently willing to accept "all comers" without taking a critical look at the beliefs of their candidates. Potentially the mess could backfire, just as it has in Louisiana, where a Ku Klux Klan member filed as a Republican and won a seat in the Legislature. Democrats could make some political pol-itical hay of the situation, but they'll have to do more than just complain about a newspaper columnist. And as for Kenley B runs dale, if he proves the opinion polls wrong and wins by one vote, he'll have me to thank. He can buy me lunch at the restaurant of his own choice. When this column first began in 1985, the editor vowed that it would stir things up and make people think." Last week it also made some readers angry and a bit infused in-fused about the message. A brief history is warranted. Only four weeks ago, some Davis County Clipper readers were storming storm-ing the office to complain that the newspaper was "pro-Brunsdale" due to front-page coverage of candidate can-didate Kenley B run sd ale's statements on the Bountiful pipeline issue. That was four weeks ago. Last week this column touched a different nerve as Democrats stormed the office and lit up the telephone lines complaining that this column had trashed B runs dale and his party. Controversy is obviously an equal opportunity employer. If the Democrats are mad at me, they're picking on one of their own. I frequently vote for Democrats, have worked on Democratic campaigns, cam-paigns, and may well end up voting ,for Kenley Brunsdale in November's general election. Last week's satirical view of southern Davis County conservatism conser-vatism was not intended to make Democrats look like "idiots" as one reader assumed. The point was that Democrats need to field a complete com-plete list of candidates and fund them adequately. The Republicans can't have a loyal opposition when there's no one to oppose. Last week's column noted that any Democrat in southern Davis County faces an uphill battle. The angry callers have not refuted that. Last week's column noted that the number of Democratic candidates can-didates filing for the county's general gen-eral election can be counted on one hand. The angry callers have not |
