Show Hussein 's guests ' are defined as hostages in U. S. The audacity of Saddam Hussein to suggest that the 21,000 Westerners, including 3,000 Americans are "guests" of Iraq gives us an insight into the dictator's thinking. If anyone wondered whether the analogy of Saddam Hussein Hus-sein to predecessor, aggressor and mass murderer Adolf Hitler, might be an exaggeration, all doubt was removed by his shameless performance on Thursday when he assembled a group of his British "guests" before television cameras. The prisoners were obviously afraid, and the young English boy he called to him could not comprehend what this "Butcher of Baghdad" wanted from him. Saddam's attempts to appear j as a benevolent benefactor to the group woefully failed. j Since the invasion of Kuwait, there have been countless television programs showing the Persian Gulf, and countless news reports about Saddam's reputation. Many of those reports have uncovered the facts about his reign of terror. Only j a few weeks ago a television report showed the children of a i small village who had been killed by a nerve-gas attack by Saddam's soldiers. Saddam stands ready to sacrifice thousands of his "guests" in order to have his way with his Arab neighbors and control 40 percent of the world's oil. The children displayed on Thursday are among those Saddam plans to place at nuclear facilities and poison-gas plants. These will obviously be the targets if the world reacts with force against the madman. President Bush has said "We are striking a blow for the 1 principle that might does not make right." But, might has made right for Saddam. The eight year war with Iran proved this. His almost uncontested take-over of Kuwait has proven it ; even further. He is now in a position of power. The loss of the Mideast's oil threatens the United States and ' it's people's way of life. But, beyond the illegal means which has created the loss of the oil, Americans believe that killing people just for the fun of it is wrong. Saddam goes against our normally accepted behavior. He is a terrorist demagogue who is ready to use chemical weapons and may soon have nuclear arms. The United States has throughout history taken on the unen- viable task at times of playing big brother to the world. Never has the world needed a big brother more than today. Saddam must be stopped, and he must be stopped quickly. And there is really no one to do it but America. We applaud the 1 1 men and women of Davis County who have been called, and ; may still be called to serve their country during this crisis, i America has told the world the behavior of this thug will not be tolerated. Our great danger is delay. Our goal should be to secure the peace that follows victory. We wish our armed forces God-speed in their mission to eradicate tyranny. |
