Show NEWS BRIEFS I Chlorine hospitalizes four BOUNTIFULChlorine dumped into a garbage can outside 5-Points 5-Points Mall sent four people to the hospital and brought the Bountiful Fire Department to the scene to properly dispose of the hazardous chemical. The chlorine was discovered Friday morning when a maintenance man was dumping the garbage. The chlorine had mixed with water and milk, and when the sack was removed, the fumes overwhelmed the man. According to Deputy Fire Chief Ron Hatch, chlorine was discovered at 1800 South and Main Street. His suspicion is that the chlorine was in a container that fell off a vehicle in the intersection and someone picked it up and put it in the garbage can at 5-Points. Jeff Bemson, manager of 5-Points said the chemical was not from the mall. "We don't ever use chlorine or have any use for it here in the mall,' he said. The chemical was contained and neutralized with water by the fire department. The southern part of the mall was ventilated as a precaution precau-tion against fumes. The four people were sent to Lakeview Hospital for chest X-rays and other precautionary measures and released. Lack of public awareness seems to be the main problem with disposing of hazardous chemicals. "Before disposing of them," said Hatch, 'you need to check and read the labels. If you have a problem with disposing of them, call the Health Department or an environmental envir-onmental agency." |
