Show Pipeline opponents urge FERC to study Chevron route By JUDY JENSEN Editor The Wasatch Variation of the Kern RiverWyCal pipeline may soon have a strong rival. Bountiful City Council woman Renee Coon, at the urging of Kenley Brunsdale, attorney for many of the opposing entities, has received- the support of several Davis County groups, including Bountiful, West Bountiful, and North Nor-th Salt Lake cities, the Bountiful Hills Residents and Concerned Citizens Association, and Senator Lane Beattie and State Representative Represen-tative Nancy Lyon, and Uintah Basin State Representative Beverly Evans, in urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to re-evaluate the Chevron OilNew Castle route in eastern Utah. This route, which would completely com-pletely bypass the Wasatch front, could be utilized at approximately a ten percent increase over the cost of the Wasatch Variation. SEE PIPELINE A-2 Pipeline CONT. FROM A-1 According to supporters, the Chevron OilNew Castle route was not given detailed screening during the preliminary phase of fact finding fin-ding which ultimately selected the Wasatch Variation. Coon said several factors make this a desirable route. "It avoids populated areas. It follows an existing ex-isting utility corridor, which includes in-cludes UP&L power lines, Chevron and Mountain Fuel pipelines, and it doesn't go through recreational areas. Uintah Basin wants it, as it will help the economy. This is better all the way around for Utah," she said. Coon added, "It's now up to the state officials and our federal officials offi-cials to put the pressure on the pipeline companies to be responsible responsi-ble and make the change. We want the pipeline, but not the Wasatch Variation." Coon said she hopes this new support for the Chevron OilNew Castle route will send a clear message that Utah does not want to rid itself of the pipeline. "We want them to know we support a Utah pipeline, but it just makes more sense to construct it where none of the disadvantages of the Wasatch Variation exist." |
