Show Grass fires pulled firefighters from three departments The fires caused minimal damage to railroad storage sheds located near the tracks, destroyed a small bam and burned several telephone poles which were later replaced by Utah Power and Light Company. Telephone lines servicing the West Bountiful area were melted from the heat, but service was restored as soon as the fires were out Fifty-five firefighters responded from the three departments and spent about two hours battling the fast moving flames. "We had one engine standing by at the station in case there were any other calls," Graham said. "We were fortunate we didn't have any other calls at the south end during that time. We were pretty well tapped out." By SCOTT SUMMERILL BOUNTIFUL-Grass fires whipped by high winds knocked out telephone service in West Bountiful and kept firefighters from South Davis Fixe District (SDFD), Bountiful Boun-tiful Fire Department and Farm-ington Farm-ington Fire Department hustling over the weekend. SDFD Division Chief Terry Graham said three grass fires, one at 400 North, one at 100 North and one at Pages Lane, were probably caused by a passing train throwing sparks from an overheated brake on one of the wheels. r. "It's a fairly common occurrence," occur-rence," Graham said. "One of the brakes gets hot and locks up the wheel and sparks go flying. The railroad has sensors set up to let the engineers know when it happens." There were no injuries from the fires, and no dollar loss has been assessed yet. But, officials don't expect the amount to be high. "There was some agricultural loss of trees and gardens from the heat," Graham said. |
