Show Braves beat Vikes in opener ; " Z ' ' i ' " " I Xf -- : .tC " A$ff ' ' s - - - . v '4 ' , - ' - ' : : 1 : " J o By TOM HARALDSEN bountiful-Two things became abundantly clear Friday night during Bountiful High's 25-0 opening-game victory over View-mont: View-mont: The Braves can be a very explosive ex-plosive offensive team, and the Vikes are a lot better than many people may think. Certainly a happy Bountiful coach Larry Wall felt that way, praising Viewmont after the game for its excellent play. And with the exception of a couple of critical big plays and one defensive stand, the results of this game might have been very different. Friday's opening half could have been called the Polaroid half--you know the 60-second excitement. That's because, frankly, all of the excitement occurred in the game's opening minute. Bountiful quarterback Austin Lindsey dropped back on the first play and hit Chris Godfrey with a short pass. Godfrey then broke up-field up-field and went 63 yards to make it 6-0 just 25 seconds into the game. Viewmont's Mike Ewing smothered the point-after attempt, and that 6-0 score held up through halftime. Other than the opening bomb, the Braves did nothing offensively in the first half. Meanwhile, Viewmont View-mont quarterback Jason Hynek, much improved and clearly looking more confident than a year ago, was leading the Vikings to an impressive im-pressive showing. The Vikes Kevin Campbell, a fine kicker, narrowly missed on field goal attempts at-tempts of 52 and 55 yards, and the Braves never crossed midfield again in the first half, a tribute to Viewmont's defense. After both teams exchanged interceptions, Kory Andreasen picking pick-ing off a pass for Bountiful and Jared Leishman returning the favor for Viewmont, the Vikes marched to the Bountiful 1 1. Hynek had the big gainer, a 53-yard run on first down following Leishman 's pick. Viewmont moved to the five, but a third-down clipping penalty moved them back to the 21, and Campbell's Camp-bell's 38-yard attempt was wide left. Suddenly, Bountiful's offense came alive. Lindsey hit Aaron Roderick with two short passes for 31 yards. Chris Jones carried twice for 19 yards to the Viewmont 30, and Lindsey then passed to Roderick for a 30-yard score that made it 12-0 with 4:59 left. A two-point two-point conversion pass failed. The Vikes started another drive at their 20, moving to Bountiful's 45 before the drive stalled. After a short punt, the Braves started at their 22. On second down, Lindsey hit a streaking Roderick on a fly pattern for 77 yards and a score. Jason Haslam's PAT made it 19-0 Viewmont's kicker Kevin Campbell just misses this 55 yard field goal attempt which would have put his team on the board in first half action Aug. 24. Campbell also missed a 52 yard attempt leaving the Vikings scoreless in their 1 990 debut against the Bountiful Braves. The Braves won 25-0. with 1:17 to go. On that series, Hynek had been injured, so the Vikes turned to backup Justin Tippetts, who had played a marvelous game as a halfback to that point. Tippetts' first pass of the fourth quarter was picked pick-ed off by Andreasen, who stepped between the ball and receiver and went 30 yards for the score. Hynek later returned and marched the Vikes to the Bountiful seven in the final two minutes, but a fumble led to a Braves' touchback and the shutdown was maintained. Lindsey played very well for Bountiful, completing seven passes for 230 yards and three scores. His leadership on the field seemed to show as well. For Viewmont, Hynek had a great game with 121 yards rushing on 13 attempts. The Vikes defense, led by junior Joey Sanduk and senior Troy Buming-ham, Buming-ham, showed it will be something to reason with this fall. The Braves, who are ranked first in 3A by one Salt Lake newspaper and third by the other, must now host Layton Friday at 7:30 p.m. The improved Lancers lost narrowly, 20-14, to Alta on Friday. Viewmont will travel to Woods Cross Friday at 7:30 p.m. as well. . - - . ; . - . H-v7..;..?;-....'.,;'; ' :.'::. '' '' -I sssi..-. .-. -s . ,;,.-.i:;-r m S If - :- -i-'.. " .' ..' Pv& x : Viewmont quarterback Jason Hynek, and the rest of the Vikings, refused to give up in a dog fight with the Bountiful Braves Aug. 24. In spite of being behind 1 9-0, Hynek came back from an injury to march his team all the way to the seven yard line in the final two minutes of play; however, a disapointing fumble left the Vikes scoreless. |
