Show t Alternate energy to meet Utah's needs SALT LAKE CITY -Congressma n Dan Marriott (R-Utah) predicted recently that energy from geothermal and solar sources could eventually provide most or all of Utah's electricity needs. Speaking before the 1980 convention of the Geothermal Resources Council at Hotel Utah in Salt Lake, Marriott said the United States must speed the development of geothermal and other alternative energy sources to free this county from dependence on the OPEC Cartel. A member of the House Interior Subcommittees on Energy and Environment; En-vironment; Marriott layed out the backgroud in geothermal legislation in Congress and a scenario for energy independence. in-dependence. "Right now geothermal is producing practically no electricity," elec-tricity," Marriott said, " yet it has the potential of replacing all of the electricity produced by oil, possibly even more. Continued the Utahn, "My feeling for energy independence is to develop a plan now and get more money into geothermal, solar, synluels, tar sands, oil shale and other domestic sources. We must decontrol the price of domestic oil and get rid of the windfall profits tax. We must move into mass transportation and get rid of gas guzzling cars." Marriott criticized Congress for having too many committess dealing with energy. "We've got so many committees of jurisdiction that it's hard to get anything done.
