Show Cedar JV, Freshmen defeated "We lost our regular kicker, Mark Esplin, with a hurt knee. Things didn't go too well for us in that department after that." Also injured was Danny Esplin, who suffered a mild concussion. On defense, O'Neal rated Bulloch and Derek Bohne as his top players this game. "The Beaver coaches singled Bulloch out as one of the tougher defensive players they'd played against this year." "We'll be trying a different style of blocking, because of the size of their team," O'Neal said. "We'll also be cutting down on the plays that take a lot of time to develop." O'Neal concluded, "I do think we'll be a little more ready for them this time." Both of Cedar High's younger football teams continued to fall on hard times, the sophmores dropping a heartbreaking 33-27 over-time game to Dixie, and the freshmen being routed by Beaver's JVs 35-0. In the sophmore game, Troy Nielsen started things outwith a bang, running back the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. But Dixie came back with three scores of their own, and led 19-7 most of the game. Cedar's own comeback was keyed by a 5-yard power run by Troy Nielsen and a well-executed well-executed 20-yard reverse to K.C. Jones. Cedar entered the final quarter down 27-19, but were able to tie it up on quarterback Robert Nakken's keeper, and successful two-point conversion. The fourth quarter ended tied at 27. Dixie won the overtime toss, and got the ball on the 10-yard line. They scored on the third play, but failed on the conversion, con-version, making it 33-27. Cedar fumbled the ball away on its first try from the 10, and the game ended. "Generally, we played good ball," said Coach Kim Matheson. "We did make some mistakes on coverage, and Dixie was able to hurt us pretty bad on a halfback pass because of the confusion. Matheson singled out the play of Darren Green and David Piper on defense. Offensively, Neilsen ran well for the Redmen, Matheson said. Also, he praised his offensive of-fensive line, particularly Brett Jackson and David Benson, "for really opening up some holes in that second half. I felt really good overall about their play." Matheson said he was pleased with his team's comeback, even though it fell short in overtime. "We all felt like sitting down and crying," ( Matheson said. "The kids played so hard." The sophmores face Carbon this afternoon at 4 on the CHS Football Field. "I don't know much about Carbon," said Matheson. "But I think we're going to get them. The kids need a few victories in these last games to build up their morale." The freshmen game didn't go as well, the team losing by even more than the earlier 14-0 defeat they faced in Beaver. "We were in bad field position most of the game," lamented Coach Benny O'Neal. "We ran the ball pretty well, but they just wore us down as the game went on." O'Neal said running back Greg Bulloch piled up 80 yards, but was unable to get a score. "We were averaging about six-yards-per-carry most of the game, but had quite a few drives stopped by penalties. O'Neal said the lack of a consistant kicking game hurt the Redmen. |
