Show Ceciq r City &o re K-Mart applies for permit Amid rumors that K-Mart K-Mart has decided not to build a new store in Cedar City, representatives of MGM Construction of Salt Lake City, the general contractor for the new building, applied for a building permit Friday. According to City Building Inspector Bob Behunin, final approval for the permit could be issued any time next week. Speculation concerning the store has run ram pant in the city ever since K-Mart was issued an industrial revenue bond by the city council over a year ago. The application for the permit is considered concrete evidence that the store will finally be built, and soon. Behunin said that groundbreaking could possibly come as early as next week. City Manager Joe Melling predicted it will be the week following. The $1.5 million, 60,800 square foot building will be the first of three on the South Main site. Skaggs has also announced intentions in-tentions to build; and according to Behunin, there will also probably be a grocery store, probably Alpha-Beta. K-Mart officials have set a hopeful opening date of early spring 1981. Contractors have already been named, said Melling, and work should begin "any time now." |
