Alene Chamberlain returned this week from Washington D.C. where she attended the Second Annual 4-H Nutrition Leader Training at the National 4 4-H Center. Alene was one of 125 delegates from 41 states and the District of Columbia. The sessions focused on the 4-H foods and nutrition program and were designed to strengthen skills of adult volunteer- leaders, to make learning fun for youth and adults, to identify and use community com-munity resources and to build careers into nutrition programming. The forum was made possible by a grant from the Campbell Soup' Company, Camden, N.J.. Participants attended in-depth seminars on nutrition and health, how to measure impact, reeling in your resources; resour-ces; and managing 4-H food nutrition programs. Other workshops included in-cluded nutrition and physical fitness, energy and food, motivating young people and stretching food dollars. Alene said the most interesting in-teresting parts of these sessions were the ideas presented for changing the attitudes of young people about nutrition and good eating habits, especially in the area of obesity. A highlight of the conference was a one-day field trip to the Campbell Soup Company in Camden where par ticipants studied the research and operational aspects of the company, and explored career potentials in the foods industry. The delegates were able to talk personally per-sonally with many of the leading home-economists employed by Campbells. They visited the ex-. ex-. perimental kitchens, as well as the bacteriology labs and the marketing division. Another 4-H conference highlight was the 4-H Fair, in which participants par-ticipants shared ideas for innovative teaching methods.
