Show Two high schools that were defeated by the Uintah High School wrestling team in dual meets during the past season captured first place in state wrestling tournaments. The Uintah Utes downed Meeker 38 to 11 and the Cowboys placed second in the Class 2-A State Tournament in Colorado. Uintah downed Green River 32 to 18 and the Wolves nabbed the state title in Wyoming. Wyom-ing. Uintah thumped Union 43 to 11 and the Cougars netted first place in the Utah 2-A state meet. The Meeker Cowboys placed second in Colorado at 97V4 counters and Rocky Ford placed first at 116. Wray placed third at 83 counters and Fort Lupton netted fourth at 79. Roosevelt placed fifth at 64 and Rifle captured sixth at 63 points. David Duran of Gunnison won the 98 pound crown when he pinned Doug Barrientos of Olathe in 59 seconds and Chris Garcia of Rocky Ford won the 105 pound title when he downed Gene Speyer of Highland, 8-2. Ft. Lupton's Sonny Bachicha placed first at 112 when he pounded Dan Emmer of Rifle, 16-4. Rick Romero, Paonia, nabbed first place when he decisioned Wade Smith, Wray, 5-1. Meeker's Keenan Turner collected first place at 126 pounds when he edged Ernie Montanez of Rocky Ford, 4-3 in overtime. The match was tied at 44 after one round. Turner gained a reversal and had a 7-6 lead after two rounds. However, Montanez gained a reversal in the third round for an 8-7 lead, but Turner garnered an escape with 19 seconds to force the contest into overtime. The first round of overtime ended at 0-0. Turner gained an escape and Montanez pocketed a takedown for 2-1 lead. Turner tied up the contest at 2-2 2-2 with an escape and gained a takedown late in the second round for a 4-2 lead. - Montanez gained an escape in the third round and lost by one point. Mitch Bostrom of Brush downed Greg Carlson of Wray, 6-4, for first place at 132 and Shaun Smith, Wray, 138, placed first when he downed Ron Mijares of Platte Valley, 5-2. Brian Flack, Roosevelt, 145, placed first due to a 7-6 win over Paul Guenther of Lewis-Palmer. Tony Sandoval, Mapleton, nabbed first at 155 when he toppled Kevin O'Neill, Fountain, 4-2. Scott Schaffer, Monte Vista, 167, placed first due to a 7-2 win over Scott Pickert of Berthoud. Vince Holfen, Ft. Lupon, pinned Shane Webb of Steamboat Springs in 3:54 for first place at 185 pounds. John Aragon, Roosevelt, heavyweight, nabbed first place when he downed Jeff Mari of Burlington on a pin in 3:50. Willie Rael, Meeker, 119, placed third when he blanked Orlie Martinez of Erie, 1-0. Harlan Bradshaw, 145, nabbed third place on an 11-0 win over Bruce Foller of Lamar. Mike Seeley, Meeker, captured third place at 185 due to a 10-3 win over Don Witzel of Burlington. Stanley Crawford, Meeker, 132, nabbed fifth place when he nipped Roosevelt's Ron Frank, 3-2. ' Powell and Natrona entered 12 wrestlers in the state tournament in Wyoming, but Green River and its eight tusslers captured the state crown. Fernando Fer-nando Flores,. Mike Hamel and Mike Beck captured state crowns and Gary Dallman placed second. Flores won his class with a 14-5 win over Don Sides of Natrona. Flores also nabbed a 9-0 first round win and a 6-1 semi-finals victory Hamel won the 155 pound title due to a 9-4 win. Hamel won his first two mat- ' ches due to pins. Beck placed first at 157 pounds due to falls in all three matches Dallman, 132, placed second when he lost a close decision to Hank Roney of Powell. Roney was ahead 9-7 late in the third round, but Dallman reversed his opponent and put him on his back for an 11-9 lead, with 38 seconds left. However Roney rallied in the final seconds to win the match. Jeff Stacey, 105, and John Anastos, 138, captured third places. Stacey won a 4-3 overtime decision in the consolation finals for third place. Anastos lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champion, John Sides of Natrona, 11-5, but downed Bill McCrary of Powell 2-1, and then scored a takedown with ten seconds left to nip John Perkins 3 to 1 for third place. Rick Beveridge and Darren Heslep did not place. The Uintah Utes toppled Green I River, Wyoming, 32 to 18 and the Wolves placed second in the Western Regional Tournament at 131 points.! Powell placed first at 172 points. Four ' Wolves, Fernando Flores, Gary Dallman, Mike Hamel and Mike Beck, captured first place crowns. Flores won top honors when he downed Les Hewitt of Rawlins, 12-0 and Dallman placed . ' first due to an 8-6 win over Powefl's 1 Hank Rooney. Dallman jumped outtoa 6-0 lead, but got caught out of position and found himself in a 6-6 tie with one minute to go. Dallman gained a, takedown with 24 seconds left to win the ' match. Hamel placed first due to an U-0 U-0 win over Rich Cozzens. Hamel W two falls in the tournament. Beck his first place title due to a fall. Two other Green River wrestlers reached the finals. Jeff Stacey, 105, was downed by Powell's Cliff LeBlanc, 11-7 and John Anastos was downed by Powell's 138 pounder, Bill McCrary, 6-1. 6-1. Darren Heslep, 112, and Rick Beveridge, 185, placed fourth. Union captured its first ever state wrestling championship when they nipped nip-ped Wasatch 102 to 98. The Cats' 98 pounder Shawn Cuch placed first due to! a 10-1 win over Johnson Yazzie of Sani Juan and Farrell McCook, Union, 112, nabbed first place when he downed Freddie Tsosie of San Juan 12-7. Bardett Fausett, 105, Union, was edged by Jimmy Manheimer of San Juan H Jeff Samuels and Brent Cundall placed third and Dave Nielsen and Gar Powell captured fourth places. Union's state ; championship keeps the Uintah Basin's, state tournament title streak alive. The Uintah Basin has won eight state titles in a row. Uintah won the first six. J Duchesne won the 1-A crown last year and Union won the 2-A title this year. |
