Nebeker connected for 40 points as he led the Ben Lomond cagers to a 77 to 67 playoff win over the Uintah Utes. Saturday in Ogden. The victory placed Ben Lomond in the state . tournament and ended the season for the Uintah Utes. ' Ben Lomond defeated Bear River, 73 to 59. March 2 and lost to Bear River, 51-50. to break the tie for third place in Region 5. Ben Lomond lost the game when the ball was stolen by Bear River and a field goal was gained with 24 seconds left. The Ben Lomond crew was still thinking about the heartbreaking loss as the Uintah Utes jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter. Gary Galley pulled down a rebound and returned the ball to the hoop for a 2-0 lead. A charging foul was called on Ben Lomond and Brian McN'amara connected con-nected on a shot at the top of the key for a 4-0 Uintah advantage. Nebeker scored his first two-pointer of the game with 5:02 left in the first quarter to cut Uintah's lead to two points at 4-2, but the brother combo of Brian and Randy McNamara connected con-nected on field goals for an 8-2 advantage. ad-vantage. A three-point play by Nebeker narrowed Uintah's lead to three points at 8-5, but the Utes gained a five point lead on two free throws by Galley. The Utes acquired a seven point lead on a two-pointer from the top of the key by Galley. Ben Lomond's only offense, Nebeker, struck for a field goal, but Drollinger popped in a free throw and Mike Johnson fired in a two-pointer for a Uintah eight point lead of 15-7. Ben Lomond gained an 18-17 lead on a three-point play by Nebeker. Denison put in a free throw for a 19-17 lead, but Galley popped in a shot to tie up the game at 19-19. Johnson tied up the gameat 35-35 on a close-in shot, but tall Povey must have thought his name was Nebeker as he put in an outside shot for a 37 -35 lead. However, the real Nebeker returned as he struck for a field goal and a 39-35 advantage. Two free throws by Johason and a field goal by Walker placed the Utes within two points of the Ben Lomond lead, but Ben Iximond scored six straight points on two-pointers by Watkins and Nebeker for a 47-39 advantage. ad-vantage. Gary Weight, remarked, "We got into foul trouble and that hurt us on defense. The fouls took away our aggressiveness. We had three players. Walker, Galley and Brian McNamara. foul out. but we never gave up. People came off the bench and did a good job. Ben Lomond got a ten-point lead in the third quarter and that was the ball game.
