Show Hl'RKICANE DOWNS WASATCH Hurricane shocked U-hi, Thursday; jolted Manti, Friday and whipped past Wasatch, Saturday, 64-58, for first place in the 2-A Slate Tournament at BYU. Hurricane struck quickly, using lightning speed, a four corners offense and a devastating press. The town had waited 56 years for its first state championship cham-pionship and when it finally got it, there was a wild celebration. The game was tied five times in the first quarter and once at 27-27 in the second period. The Tigers got baskets from Dan Humphries and Reed Slack and four free throws to take a 35-30 halftime lead. Wasatch was behind by 13 points with 6:38 left in the third period. Wasatch cut Hurricane's lead to three points, but Hurricane's four corner offense kept the Wasps from getting any closer. The Wasp's last gasp came on a basket by Chris Christensen with 1:35 left to go to cut the lead to five. However, Hurricane put in three free throws and nabbed a six point win. Humphries and John Beatty scored 16 points for Hurricane. |
