Show BYU's Synthesis scheduled for April 16 performance Synthesis, lirighnm Young University's Univer-sity's contemporary music ensemble, will perform in concert April 16 at 8 p.m. In tlx1 Union High Auditorium in KoosevHt. Under the direction of K. Newell Day ley, tlie 21 -me ruber group creates a musical kaleidoscope drawing from folk, jazz, country, blues, rock and pop elements. "The music we perform is literally n synthesis of many styles bused on music with American roots," Dayley snid. Synthesis' repertoire includes such numbers as "Angel Eyes," "I'll Write You A Blues," "Siimbandrea Swing" and adaptions of many well known contemporary compositions. The show, always fresh, fentures many original compositions and arrangements by student performers. A real favorite is the "Theme from Mayberry," a trumpet, solo arranged and played by Rob Mower. Members of Synthesis are skilled in composition and improvization, and spontaneity plays a large role in each performance. 'The music only gives the player the bare bone of what the composer wants and it's up to the musician to build on that," Dayley said. Synthesis' professionalism has been recognized at national and international in-ternational performances. They have toured Eastern Europe and perform each year in jazz festivals on (lie West ('(Mist. In the spring of 19111, the group performed at the pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival In Berkely, Calif., where they received a superior rating. A the 1976 Orange Coast Jazz Festival in California, Synthesis was selected its "Outstanding Band." The group, which organized In 1973, 1ms produced several recordings and has performed with renowned jazz musician Chuck Mangione and vocalist Esther Satertield. In addition to the performance at Union High School, the group will present a fireside at the Roosevelt West Stake Center on Skyline Drive at 6:30 p.m. April 16.
