Show MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS What is multiple sclerosis? It's a disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system.) Multiple sclerosis (MS) interferes with the brain's ability to control such functions as seeing, walking, talking, etc. It's called multiple because many scattered areas of the brain and spinal cord are affected. Symptoms can be mild or severe, come and go unpredictably. It's called sclerosis because the disease involves "sclerosed" or hardened tissue in damaged areas of the brain and spinal cord. Multiple sclerosis is not a mental illness, is not contagious, is not preventable or curable. ..yet! |
