Show BOUNTIFUL WLNS 4-A CROWN The Bountiful Braves captured first place in the 4-A State Tournament, Saturday when they nipped Skyline, 40-39. The Braves had a 36-31 lead with 4 A2 left, but their lead was cut to 39-37 due to the Eagles' 4 for 6 free throw shooting and the Braves 2 for 8 foul line performance. Nicklaus put his approach ap-proach some 24 feet from the flag. Watson was closer, about 12 feet, and Kite was on the fringe some 20 feet away. Nicklaus, desperately attempting to write an end to his 19-month winless streak, grazed the left side of the cup with his birdie attempt. Then it was Kite's turn. Using a lofted club, the 1981 leading money-winner money-winner deftly chipped it in the cup and went leaping about the green in sheer joy. Watson needed to make his 12 footer to extend the playoff. He missed. The victory was worth $54,000 from the total purse of $300,000 and lifted Kite's season earnings to $115,710. With 43 seconds left to play, the Eagles had the opportunity to capitalize on the Braves' misfortunes, misfor-tunes, but when the ball went inside to senior Lyndon DeYoung, the 6'8" center fumbled the hall out of bounds. The Braves put up a bad shot with 23 seconds left. Bountiful's Dan Bell went to the foul line, but he missed the front end of a one and one and the Eagles headed down the court looking for a tie. A whistle and a foul. The Eagle hopes rested on Kent Gardner, but he missed his first shot with nine seconds remaining in the contest. Gary Seljaas' free throw with eight seconds left locked up the victory for Bountiful.
