Show KITE SINKS CHIP AND NICKL.U'S Tom Kite subdued disappointed Jack Nicklaus and Dennis Watson with a chip-in birdie on the first hole of a sudden death playoff and won the Bay I fill Gold Classic in a day-late windup Monday. Kite, the little man who has made a habit of winning a great deal of money and very few titles, snared the victory in dramatic fashion. He came six shots back with a 69, then waited for almost an hour before he was confirmed as a member of the playoff threesome. Kite, Nicklaus and Watson finished regulation play in the rain-delaved tournament tied with 72 hole scores of 278, 6 under par. Nicklaus, a one stroke leader when the day's play started, had to halt an embarrassing skid with birdies on two of his last four holes to gain a shot in the playoff. Nicklaus, who had various unhappy adventures ad-ventures in water and rough, got the ball embedded em-bedded in a tree trunk and twice had to hit left handed, finally com- -pleted the last round with a 4 over par 75 on Arnold Palmer's 7,089 yard Bay Hill Club course. Watson, who watched in fascination as Nicklaus and Ray Floyd, his other playing partner, went from one disaster to another, finished with a 72. That sent them to the 15th hole, a par-4 for the playoff. |
