Show Esma Reynolds gave the lesson on Utah's early elementary schools. An elementary school was opened in Kirkland in December 1834. The Mormons very early gave attention to educational matters. President Young set Miss Mary Jane Dilworth npart to teach school In the Kort then under construction In the Great Salt Lake Ilasin in October 1B47. A military tents set up with the Kort became Utah's first school house. There were thirty students of assorted ages. Charilla Abbott became Ogden's first teacher in 1849. Here is her description of the assignment: "The colony wished me to keep school, which in our meager circumstances I undertook. un-dertook. Finding a chicken feather I made a pen. We had to collect letters from scraps of papers and old books. These we pasted on a paddle. We also made letters on our hands both front and back. In this way the children learned to read and write." |
