Show LOBOS STUN BYU The University of New Mexico's point producer guard, Phil Smith, unloaded a 20 foot jump shot as time expired Saturday to earn the Lobos 67 to 65 victory over the Brigham Young University Cougars in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Smith's swisher was a fitting climax to the Cougars' 17-12 season. It marked the fourth time since January 23 that the Cats lost on last second shots and the fifth time for the season. B Y U ' s Time Saarelainen, who went 2 for 8 from the foul line during the game, missed the front end of a one and one situation with 18 seconds left. Smith missed a 25 footer and BYU came charging down the floor. Guard Craig Christensen hit 6-foot-11 center Greg Kite under the basket and the big Cougar center stuffed home what could have been the game winner. However, BYU had called a timeout at mid-court with four seconds left. The Cats inbounded the ball, but Saarelainen's pass was fumbled out of bounds by Fred Roberts and the Lobos called time out to setup the last shot. The ball came to Smith, who drove to the top of the circle and unloaded the winner, which gave New Mexico a 14-14 season. |
