Show Hints given for installation of irrigation pipe Many miles of irrigation pipe will be installed this year with financial support from the Salinity Program, and "we at the Soil Conservation Service are concerned that these pipelines are installed properly to insure many years of trouble-free service," Bryant Brady, Soil Conservation Service, said. If you are installing pipe under the Salinity Program, there are a few items in the installation specifications that will interest you, the Soil Conservation Con-servation Service advises. All pipe should have at least 30 inches of cover over it to give the pipe adequate frost protection and also protect it from damage caused by farm equipment. Pipe should also be bedded properly. Be sure there are no rocks around the pipe, as large rocks can puncture the pipe. The fill should be well compacted around the bottom of the pipe so the pipe will be properly supported. Before placing the final backfill, fill the pipe with water and test all joints for leaks. Keep the water in the pipe during the backfill operation to prevent the pipe from "egging." When the pipe has been totally backfulled, the excavated area should be reseeded to prevent erosion, advises the Soil Conservation Service. |
