Sfleue WsIIbs nabs It appeared that Doug Mecham would have an easy time in his match with Steve Wallis as he nabbed a lead of 8-0 and won the first game, but Wallis rallied to win the second contest and the tie breaker to place first in the intermediate in-termediate division in the racquetball tournament at Uintah High School, Thursday. Steve Wallis scored his first point of the evening after Doug Mecham had jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Mecham picked up three more points for an 11 to 1 lead. Mecham had a 14 to 3 advantage, but Wallis fired in seven service points to cut Mecham's lead to 14 to 10. Mechanvnabbed two more points for a 16 to 10 lead, but Wallis narrowed the advantage by Mecham to 16 to 12. However, Mecham outscored Wallis, 5 to 1, to win the first game, 21 to 13. Wallis grabbed a lead of 2-1 early in the second game, but Mecham tied the game up at 2-2. Wallis became hot in the serving department as he garnered seven points for a 9 to 2 lead, and then picked up seven more points for a 16 to 3 advantage. Mecham scored two more points, which cut Wallis' lead to 16 to 5, but Mecham was blanked by Wallis, 5-0, the rest of the way, and Wallis won the second game, 21 to 5, Vernal's Wallis pocketed five service points for a 5-0 lead, but Mecham shutout Wallis, 6-0, for a 6-5 advantage. Wallis tied the game up at 6-6, and jumped out to a 7-6 lead, but Mecham tied the contest at 7-7. However, Wallis dished out four service points to win the tie breaker and the match, 11 to 7. Steve Wallis toppled Harley Hales in the first round, and then' he thumped Brad Weber, Burke Buckalew and Ron v Moore. Wallis was a slow starter in most of his matches as he lost the first game a number of times and had to win the second game and the tie breaker. Mecham thumped Howard Carroll in - the first round and toppled David Swett, Randy Biggs and Loun Easthope. Ron Moore defeated Wally Calder in order to advance into his match with Wallis. Steve -Smith won the consolation championship when he downed Harley Hales, 21 to 19 and 21 to 19. Smith was downed by David Swett in the first round and defeated Howard Carroll and Brent Hales in consolation matches. Harley Hales was downed by Steve Wallis in the first round and downed Tony Wright and Cliff Harrison in consolation con-solation matches. Winslow Weber, Community School Director, Uintah High Sghool, remarked remark-ed that there was great support at the racquet ball tournament. "In excess of 40 individuals participated in the competition. com-petition. There were a few mismatches, but the majority of the matches were close and competition was keen," stated Winslow Weber, "We are looking forward to bigger and better tournaments tour-naments in the future. Be aware of announcements an-nouncements regarding a tournament to be held December 25-29. We will be able to do a better job of seeding in the next tournament. Women who are interested in-terested in racquet ball are urged to take part in the tournament and increase in-crease the number of participants in the division." v '.''.
