Show Drivers question octane ratings Amoco Oil Company dealers report re-port that customers often assume that high-octane gasoline guarantees better mileage and performance. According to Amoco, this is not necessarily so. If a car is tuned to manufacturer's specifications and . runs propcily on regular grade gasoline without ping or knock, or dieseling after the engine is turned off, that is the gasoline you should use. High-octane gasoline for such an engine will acid nothing to performance perform-ance or better mileage. , Amoco warns that fuel economy and performance arc reduced when an engine is "detuned" to run on regular grade gasoline without ping or dieseling. By resetting such an engine en-gine to the manufacturer's specification specifica-tion and using a high-octane gasoline to prevent knock, better mileage and performance will prohahly result. |
