Show QjXG09 - - Uintah High School, the defending 3-A 3-A State Wrestling Champions in the state of Utah, will clash with state champions from Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado during the 1979-80 wrestling season. After the Uintah Utes compete in Wrestle Offs, Saturday, they will take part in the Steamboat Springs Tournament Tour-nament in Colorado, November 30 and December 1.' The tournament will consist of two first place teams, one fourth place school and a ninth place team. The Utah 3-A State Champions, Uintah High School and Colorado's 2-A champ, Meeker, will take part in the meet. Uintah had two first places, two seconds, four thirds, one fifth and two sixth places at the 1979 3-A state meet. Morgan Woodhouse, 132, and Josh Reynolds, 98, placed first, and Ken Cobbs, heavyweight and Wayne Huber, 185, nabbed second places. Frank Jaramillo, 105; Scott Murray, 119; Kay Smuin, 155 and Matt Hacking, 138, placed third. Allan Holmes, 126, nabbed fifth and Rick Huber, 112 and Raymond Perry, 145 garnered sixth place. Reynolds, Cobbs, Hacking, Smuin, Huber and Perry return to Uintah for the 1979-80 season. Uintah edged Box Elder, 179 to 166'2 for the 3-A title. Meeker had five tusslers who garnered gar-nered first place titles in the Colorado 2-A 2-A State Tournament in 1979. Tad Sullivan, 105; Brett Harvey, 112; Bob Gutierrez, 119, Tracy Tate, 145 and Dave Seeley, 185, placed first. Meeker also had one second place finisher. Sullivan will return for another season at Meeker. Also returning will be Kai Turner, Tony Seely and Tony Mazzola. The Meeker Cowboys toppled Paonia, 169 to 103, for first place in 1979. The fourth place team in the Wyoming 2-A State Tournament, Laramie, will also compete in the Steamboat Springs Tournament. Laramie scored 58 points and finished behind Casper Natrona, 774; Sheridan,-83 Sheridan,-83 and Green River, 84'2. Laramie had one first place champ, one second placer and two third placers. Christy Coca nabbed first place at 105 pounds for Laramie. Steamboat Springs, the host school for the tournament, captured ninth place in the 2-A meet in Colorado. The Sailors have garnered a number of state crowns in the past. Another wrestling power in Colorado, , Fruita, will also take part in the Steamboat Springs Tournament. . Fruita finished out of the top ten in the '. 2-A tourney for the first time in several years. Lanny Paulson pocketed first place at 155 pounds for Fruita in 1979. Rangely, Craig and Palisade will also compete in the meet. Uintah's first four dual meets will be against three teams that placed in the top ten and a former state champion. The Utes will take on Rock Springs, Wyoming, on the road, December 5. Rock Springs pocketed eighth place in the 2-A Wyoming State Tournament in HJ79. Bill Hower of Rock Springs captured first place at 112. Rock Springs also had one second and two fourth placers. There will be no rest for the Uintah Utes after the match with Rock Springs as they will motor to Grand Junction for a match against Central on December 12. Grand Junction Central captured first place in 1978 Colorado State Tournament and they had a lot of sophomores on the 1979 team. Uintah will compete in the Rock Springs Tournament on December 14-15. Uintah will clash with the fourth place Buffaloes in Tooele on December 20 and will host Steamboat Springs, a ninth place team, on December 22. Tooele's Mark Tate nabbed first place at 145 and Phil Torres, 98, was edged by Uintah's Josh Reynolds, and placed second. The Utes' junior varsity will host the Uintah Tournament, December 29, but the big battles for the Uintah Utes will Ix; against Nampa, Idaho, the defending defen-ding 1-A State Champions, January 3 and the Vernal Tournament, January 4-5, 4-5, which will consist of three state champions. Nampa toppled Blackfoot, 133'i to 98, for first place in the. 1979 A-l Idaho State Tournament. Nampa had two first placers, one second, two thirds and two fourths! Jim Russell, 167 and Jeff Needs, 185 placed first for Nampa. Uintah, Rock Springs, Green River, Nampa, Steamboat Springs, Skyline of Utah, Orem and Viewmont will compete com-pete in the Vernal Tournament and seven of the eight teams placed in the top ten in state tournaments last season. The Uintah Utes, Nampa and Green River, Wyoming, pocketed first place titles. Green River edged Sheridan, H4i a to H3, for first place in the Wyoming 2-A State Tournament. Green River had two firsts, two seconds and two fourths. Skyline, the fifth place team and Orem, the ninth place team, in the Utah 4-A State Tournament in 1979, will clash in the Vernal Tournament. Skyline had two third placers and one fourth placer. Orcm's Scott Hurgi, 138, placed first. Orem also had a fourth placer. Viewmont is the only team in the Vernal Tournament that did not finish in the top ten In a state tournament. |
