Leta Bullock gave a lesson on Salt Lake's Original nineteen LDS Wards. The first Sunday following the arrival of the pioneers into the valley under the leadership of Brigham Young, a meeting of thanskgiving was held and the sacrament was administered. August 22, 1847, a special conference was convened with all saints in the valley. A decision was made at that time to call the new settlement Great -Salt Lake City. John Smith was to be new stake president. In those early years, each ward functioned as a complete com-plete community unit. Houses were built and they used churches as meeting places, and first school houses until other buildings could be built. Cooperation and love created a healthy i spirit in the community. One of the first community projects was to build a fence around the area of each ward. Then in 1853, a mud wall was built around the city. Water from the canyon was placed in ditches that flowed down the streets for planting shade and fruit trees and for raising vegetable gardens. "In Genesis, it was a respectable city in which the pioneers convened." It was staked off in 135 blocks, each of ten acres and subdivided into eight lots. There were wide streets and three public squares in various parts of the city-Fifteen of the nineteen wards are still functioning in 1979. Hostesses were Rhoda Stevens and Thelma Oaks. |
