Show EEIIIS' ANGER SLOMUfiE Army Censor's Report on Mail Matter Shows Subsiding Sub-siding Ferment. BY EDWIN L. JAMES. (X. Y. Times Cable Copyright.) COBLEXZ, May 21. (Delayed) That tho Germans will sign the peace treaty is the prediction made by censors of the American army of occupation. This opinion is based on the examination of German mails of the peace terms. Here is a part of the text of a report made by the censor's department: "The subject of the allies' peace terms is naturally a prominent topic of most letters. At first there was en outburst of ind'nation. The conditions were represented rep-resented as unexpectedly severe; President Presi-dent "V ihson's fourteen points were violated; vio-lated; Germany was humiliated, bankrupt and industrially enslaved; peace terms were one of force, not of justice; were imposa.ble of fulfillment and they would mean starvation and Bolshevism for Germany. This attitude was succeeded by one of calmer inspection of the terms and consideration of Germany's best course of action. Great many favored a flat rejection. In such a case the probable prob-able occupation of the whole of Germany by the entente army was thought to be the best thing that could poss.bly happen to Germany. But clearer heads saw the dangers which would result from the refusal re-fusal to sign. "In general it may be said that the poorer and middle classes want peace at any price so that their relatives held prisoners in foreign lands may be returned re-turned to them. "Big business and importers and exporters ex-porters want peace for lifting of the blockade and to commercialize the foreign i countries. Imperialists and mil it arista ; want war, but they lack armies to influ-. influ-. ence and arouse the moribund , martial spirit in the people. We predict peace will be signed." j |
