GOLD HILL, Feb. 23 Eeport reached here this afternoon that the Indians on the Goshute reservation have threatened to kill ,11m Clover, Indian interpreter left in charge of the agency, unless he have within three days. Dr. J. II. Peck, to whom the report came, has wired to Special Agent J. L. Dorrington, in Salt Lake, conveying information of the threat and reeom-j reeom-j mending that someone other than . Clover be placed iu charge of the ; agency until Agent A. R. Frank can I return. Clover was the first Indian to regis-j regis-j ter under the draft law and has been ; active in aiding the Indian agents in j i their efforts to induce the recalcitrant j ludians to comply with the draft law relative to registration. For this reason rea-son the Indians hold him partially responsible re-sponsible for the coming of the soldiers sol-diers and the arrest and removal from the reservation of seven bucks who were tahen to Salt Lake on charges of conspiracy and obstructing operation of the selective draft law. The Indian women made n raid on I the agency where Clover and his wife j were iu charge immediate! v after the i soldiers left the reservation We.lnos- dav and threatened violence to Clover at that time. Dr. Peck went to the reservation and quieted the pouaws, but sinco then, it is reported, the men have become surlv and bitter against Clover, whom thev consider to be in league with the military authorities nnd the federal officials of-ficials in the matter of compelling the Indians to comply with the draft law. In an effort to avoid trouble, Clover I and his wife left tho ngeney jtn went to their own home to remain. But, it is reported, the Indians today sent a deputation to him and warned him that unless he leaves the reservation in three davs he will be killed. Dr. l'eck left for lbapah tonight and if possible will go on the the reservation reserva-tion iu an effort to head off any outbreak. |
