Show CHPT1 IS WOUNDED BY MEXICAN SUPER Troop of Cavalrymen at Border Search for Missing Miss-ing Enlisted Man. EL PASO, Texas, Feb. 23 Captain Joseph X. Marx of the I'nited States mounted patrol on the river front, was fired upon by Mexican snipers this afternoon, one bullet striking him in the left leg. He was taken to the Fort Bliss hospital. An enlisted man of the mounted patrol is reported missing miss-ing and a troop of cavalry has been sent to search for him. The enlisted man's horse was shot and killed. The firing came from the Mexican side of the border on what is kiown as "the Island" opposite the eastern suburbs sub-urbs of the citv. This land is on the Mexican side o'f the boundary, but on the north bank of the Kio Grande. While riding the line the Mexicans, believed to have been federal soldiers, opened fire. The enlisted man 's horse was shot and killed and Captain Marx I was hit in the leg. The firing was re- j turned bv the American patrol. A troop j of cavalrv was rushed to the scene of j the shooting anil started a search for j the missing soldier. i Firing across the border has occurred j several ''times recently and retaliatory measures have been threatened by the United States military authorities if it I was not stopped. j An injured cavalry horse was located on the Mexican side of the boundary line shortly after the shooting and the missing American soldier also may be on the Mexican side wounded. The finding of the cavalry horse on the Mexican side started a report that the American officer and the mounted patrol pa-trol had crossed the hordr without knowing it, when the Mexican soldiers had opened fire on them. |
