Education is best brought ahout by self-expression. self-expression. The children can be tauptht personal h-g'.ene than which few things are more important, and often, more neglected. They may study and apply the principles' princi-ples' of first aid, of simple remedies for ; common injuries. The study of sunlta- , tion in the higher grades can be con-' nected in a vital way with the Red Cross outline. The spirit of altruism can be introduced in a very receptive field. I The value of this work to the Red Cross is obvious. The habits of childhood child-hood persist in after life. If the boys I and girls of today can be enrolled in an : organization of this character, and can actually labor or suffer for it. they will alwavs be strong in its favor. "The boy is father to the man.'' Many a parent is influenced by his children. And who will deny the beneficial effect on the Red Cross nf malting It a center of interest in-terest to lheboys and gir'.s. Tho-e great and good people who head the American Red Cross early realized tliis fact, and set about some means of tapping this great reservoir of enthusiasm. enthusi-asm. But until recently no definite or- i ganization had been attempted. The plan, iu 'brie', docs not make a new organization, organiza-tion, but works through proven ones. The .lul ior Red Cross is responsible to the local chapter and is directed by a rhr.pter school eomn; iltee. iiominate.it from and by tile school officials of the LOir.inu:.,!'.' and appointed by the local chapter. To he a success the plan must be under the -direction and with the sup- : port of the school men. Each school de- j siring to enroll as an auxiliary com- ; municates through its principal with the . chapter s.-hool committee. That is, t.;e! whole school must enroll, and not a few j rooms. I The membership fee is 23 cents for each ; pupil in the school. It was thought best, for manv reasons, to have this nominal : fe. Tiie American does not want some- I thing for nothing. Ore of the chief ; values of this work wii! be tile dignify- ! ing influence of faerif.ee. None of this 1 monev goes to the local chapter. It is planned that ail of it be sp.-nt for the i purchase nf materials to be made up In the school. The money may be raised j in a school in various ways there is no i retrictian r'-noed thereon. However, ll has iei-n thought best to stress the i gic.ip membership. and before a s. hcol oan Income an auxi.iary it must 'ave the '.'a-centa fee to cover every pu- , pi! on its rolls. For th school that ranrn: raise t ie money there has been special provision made! 1.' the prir.eip.-ll can convince the chapter school committee that his s. hool j will' perform some service, or lurn In work that will total cents per capita, the committee may use its Judgment in granting rmior membership. i After n'rani-'cmen's satisfactory to the school committee have been made. t.'ie school is formally designated a Junior ; Red t'ioJfl hr.ol auxiliary and is given Red Cross bui'ons for each clcld. The chapter provides lr.strueto-s where de- , sired for scecial work. The boys go to work on shin-ur.g cases, splints, crutches, i rane.a etc. Tiie g-rl emplov their indus- j trial feriort in making hospital garments. In knr.tir.g and in activities of a similir nature. Even the lit tie- children can do t '.flr part. There are scrap boo'ss to he made aid little things of a less particular nature to be knitted or sewed. The rL-in provides for specified time In the nav's schedule for Rett Cross work. This worl: mav be corre'a'cd In countles j nnvs. Tor Instance, in spelling.
